Future STI product to arrive « from Japan with love » to make debut in Detroit
“Something special from Subaru Tecnica International is coming to America for the first time ever” reads the description in Subaru’s latest teaser video for the upcoming WRX STI, suggesting the Japanese brand is going above and beyond for the sports sedan’s latest gen.
Subaru recently trademarked the “S209” badge, which could mark the newest edition of a special series in the model’s range that started in 2000 with the S201.
The series is more powerful than the standard STI, with, for example, the most recent S208 producing 329 horsepower and 319 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0-litre flat-four.
S20(X) series cars have never yet seen American soil, but the patent application and video suggest we might finally see the upgraded version of the STI here.
Autoblog reports the car shown in the video is distinguishable from STI RA shown earlier this year thanks to a few variations.
The supposed S209 has a slightly different front fascia, with small winglets flanking the front intakes; and there are wider fender flares to match. Gold wheels are also back, while the rear wing provides some modicum of performance enhancement.
Whatever this car is, Subaru says it will be revealed at the Detroit auto show in January—”from Japan, with love.”
